HEAVENLY MINDED

By Carolyn Dale Newell

Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.

Col. 3:2 (NKJV)

What do you think about most of the time? Are you thinking about your job, your bills, vacation plans, fixing that leaky faucet or that little thing that did not go your way? Have you thought about how god has it all under control? While we cannot get through life without thinking and making decisions about some of these things, we usually spend too much time thinking about the mundane things of life. Our focus is to be on the things of God, not the things of this world (1 John 2:15). A lot of our thoughts are about things we cannot change. We often concentrate on the future, rather than today. Some future planning is good, but excessive concern about the future is a lack of trust in God.

Jesus said, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matt. 6:33). The “things” that Jesus referred to were food and clothing. This command will give us peace of mind. Think of what God has done for you and where He has brought you from.

In order to think on the things above, we must spend some time in God’s word. Reading Scripture will remind us that God is in control. That should comfort us. God has a plan and a purpose and it will work out for our good (Rom. 8:28). So let’s spend time with god today

Precious Father,

We get so distracted by this world without realizing it. Forgive us for the times we fail to set our minds on You and on things above. Help us to carve out a time for prayer and Bible study every day, and guard that time. Thank You for providing us an eternal home in heaven. Amen.

DIG DEEPER

Read Col. 3:1-11.

HIKING THE TRAIL

Choose a Bible verse and meditate on it throughout the day especially when worry and doubt start to fill your thoughts.
