Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
Matthew 6:30 NKJV
In the preceding verses, Jesus commanded us not to worry. He used the birds as His first example, explaining that since God feeds them then He will certainly feed His children because they are of more value than the birds. He told them that worry over food and clothing will not add any more time to their lives (v. 27). Now He turns to the lilies which were wild flowers among the grass. God so beautifully arrays the lilies even though their life is so short. Surely, He will clothe us. Clothing was important for people in that day. They did not have closets full of clothes as we do, and they did not have department stores where they could quickly run out and buy something.
Our worries may not include food and clothing. We may worry about our jobs, our children and our health among many other things. It is still a sin. We do not want to fall into the “little faith” group. We need to understand that all we have comes from God – food, clothes, jobs, homes, cars, health…
Jesus repeats the command, “Do not worry” (v. 31). Then He explains that the unsaved worry about food, drink, and clothing. Christians need not to worry because “your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.” (v. 32). He knows and He will provide.
We have been blessed with more than what we really need. God is merciful and full of loving kindness. Thank Him for all He has done and all He will do. Put your complete trust in Him. Worry will not change tomorrow, but it will darken today.
Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your plentiful provisions. Sometimes I think I am responsible for my needs, and I worry. Then I remember who my Father is, and I am reminded of Your continual supply. Amen.
