MOVING HEAVEN AND EARTH
So the sun stood still,
And the moon stopped,
Til the people had revenge Upon their enemies… – Josh. 10:13
We have all heard the adage, “moving heaven and earth” to demonstrate ambition in accomplishing a goal or sometimes it is used to show the impossibility of something. There is nothing impossible with god (Luke 1:37). Critics like to explain this miracle away as an eclipse or as poetic literature. Whether the sun moved in reverse or the earth paused in its orbit, it was one of God’s miracles.
Joshua and the Israelites were battling the Amorites. God had already sent a great hail storm which killed more Amorites than Israel had slaughtered (v.11). As the battle continued, Joshua needed more daylight. With great faith in God’s promise to deliver Israel, Joshua cried out for the sun to stand still and God faithfully interrupted the movements of the universe.
We need the faith of Joshua to ask God to move the unmovable out of our lives. God can move away the discouragement, the disappointments, and the distress. Jesus spoke these words to his disciples just before His arrest and crucifixion, “…In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” He knew that it was going to be a difficult time for them and He wanted to encourage them. We should take encouragement also. Many thanks to our mighty and faithful God, Who is able to move heaven and earth!
