Throwback Thursday: The Virtuous Wife

THE VIRTUOUS WIFE

By Carolyn Dale Newell

Strength and honor are her clothing; she shall rejoice in time to come.

Prov. 31:25 (NKJV)

What does the Proverbs 31 woman look like? Let’s find out! First, she is trusted by her husband to handle the finances, the house, and the children (v. 11-12). He doesn’t need to worry about frivolous spending, and she is deserving of his praise (v. 28).

This lady is willing to work with her hands (v.13). She goes to great lengths to prepare special dishes for her family (v. 14). She rises while it is still dark to provide her family food (v. 15). Her work continues into the night (v.18).

She is also enterprising with her own business and investments (v. 16). The Proverbs 31 woman conducts her business with much consideration and wisdom.

This godly lady “extends her hand” to the poor and needy (v. 20). Not only does she give from her profits, but you will find her serving in the soup kitchen.

The only mention of her outer beauty speaks of the fine clothes she makes for herself (v. 22). However, her character is one of wisdom and kindness (v. 26). She is a God-fearing woman (v. 30). Her wisdom and strength come from the Lord.

Our focal verse tells us that she is strong and honorable. She will rejoice in time to come, but when is this time? Surely a Proverbs 31 woman is always joyful. Is that time when her children grow up and praise her (v. 28)? Does she rejoice because she does not fear the winter snow since she has provided warm clothing for her family (v. 21)? When the cold winds of suffering howl, she will rejoice because her joy is in the Lord. One day, she will survey her life, and she will rejoice. She will have no regrets. This strong, wise, kind, hard-working lady will hear the words, “Well done, My good and faithful servant”, and she will rejoice.

Heavenly Father,

Create in each of us ladies what we need to be a Proverbs 31 woman. Thank You for the areas in which we may be strong, and work on us where we are weak. For Your glory, answer our cry! Amen.
