Less is More With Jesus

LESS IS MORE WITH JESUS

By Carolyn Dale Newell

Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.” One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?”

John 6:7-9 NKJV

Unless you were born wealthy, you have experienced financial troubles. The expensive repair which is a necessity. The medical bills from a serious illness. Day-to-day living when you are unable to work.

Philip and Andrew were using earthly wisdom to solve the problem of feeding the multitudes. Philip looked at the bank account. He did the math. Two hundred denarii would not buy enough food. Andrew chimed in with the report of a young lad with five loaves and two fish. That would not help either.

They did not rush off to make an unaffordable purchase on their credit card. That is usually our first response, putting us in debt. However, they forgot to figure in Jesus. He gave thanks for the small meal, and it fed over five thousand people.

There was a need, a necessity, and Jesus met it. Friend, He meets our needs too. We must remember to include Jesus in our accounting.

We do not presume on God by digging ourselves into debt, expecting Him to rescue us. We must be good stewards with our money, because it is God’s money. You can spend it frivolously or wisely. You can tithe and give, or you can be greedy. You can live above your means or live within them.

When we make sound financial decisions, we are blessed. When we sow, we will reap. He gives us exactly what we need, and sometimes He blesses us by supplying a few of our wants.

Friend, if your accounts are looking anemic today, remember that less is more with Jesus.

Lord Jesus, We have needs. We have bills. We have repairs. Grant us the wisdom to spend and budget wisely. When we do our accounting, help us always remember to count on You. Thank You. Amen.

No Need To Worry

NO NEED TO WORRY

By Carolyn Dale Newell

“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or

What you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”

Matt. 6:25 NKJV

Jesus commanded us not to worry. It is a sin. What does it say to God and to others when we don’t trust Him to provide for us? As children, did we ask our parents if there was enough food for dinner? Did we ask them if we would have clothes to wear? No, and we should not worry about things when God supplies our every need.

We fail to understand God’s promises and resources. He has promised to supply “all your need according to His riches…” (Phil. 4:19). His supply is according to all of His riches, not just a portion of them.

There is also a failure to understand God’s provisions and the depths of His love. He created us, and Christ died for us, meeting our greatest need as our Savior. Why would He save us and then neglect us, leaving us to our own means to survive?

Jesus uses the birds as an example. God feeds them. “Are you not of more value than they?” (Matt. 6:26). If God feeds the birds, certainly He will feed us. Food may not be something you worry about, but it was a great concern for the Jews. They did not have refrigerators or Wal-Mart. Most of their food had to be acquired daily.

We need to understand God’s sovereignty. He has a purpose for the life of every Christian. That is why Jesus told them that life is more than food and clothing. He will sustain us to accomplish His purpose.

Once we comprehend all of God’s attributes, we must trust Him to take care of us. There is no need to worry about the necessities of life. We are the children of the King.

Father, forgive us when we begin to worry about things. Help us trust in Your wonderful provisions. Thank You for Your amazing care. Amen.

With today’s rising grocery prices, worrying about food is a legitimate concern for some people. If you are in that situation, I would love to pray for you. If you are not struggling to purchase food, look around your church and neighborhood to find someone who you can help.
