Throwback Thursday: The Sacrifice of Thanksgiving

THE SACRIFICE OF THANKSGIVING

Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving,

And declare His works with rejoicing.

Ps. 107:22 (NKJV)

I never thought of thankfulness as a sacrifice until I began to study this verse. In the Old Testament, sacrifices of thanksgiving were made with unleavened bread (Lev. 7:12). However, in the New Testament, we are supposed to be “living sacrifices” (Rom. 12:1).”Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.” (Heb. 13:15).

Do we give the thanks and praise to God that He deserves? No, because we can never thank or praise Him enough for our salvation, not to mention everything else. I think of the many times when my husband has hit the brakes to avoid an accident when we are traveling, and I quickly ask God for help. How do I thank Him? “Thank You, God.” That is not a sacrifice. Some definitions of sacrifice are surrender or take a loss. Spending more time in prayer thanking and praising God would be a sacrifice of time. Time is an important commodity in our busy world, and we need to give God more of it.

We have so much to be thankful for. How can we not spend the time necessary to thank God and praise Him? He has saved us, rescued us from hell. Certainly, a Christian’s life is not a garden of roses, but how could we get through the bad times without His grace? He is our protector and our provider. Through Him, we have joy and peace which the world cannot understand.

There are so many people who need prayer, but once in a while, pray without asking God for anything. Just begin thanking Him for all that He has done. You will leave the throne of grace rejoicing and feeling greatly blessed.

Heavenly Father, We praise You, and we thank You for salvation, provision, grace, protection, strength…May all the glory, honor, praise be to You! Amen!

Throwback Thursday: Don’t Worry, God Will Provide

DON’T WORRY, GOD WILL PROVIDE

By Carolyn Dale Newell

And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

Genesis 22:14 NKJV

God tested Abraham when He commanded Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, his only son (Gen. 22:1-2). Like most trials, this one did not make sense. God had never required a human sacrifice. It was in direct contrast to His nature. Why would God take Abraham’s son of old age, especially when He had promised to make Abraham the father of many nations?

God tests us so we can learn to trust Him. Abraham passed the test. Not once during the three day journey to the place of sacrifice did he question God. Abraham knew God as Jehovah Jireh, “The-Lord-Will-Provide”. Abraham believed God would resurrect Isaac, even though he had never seen a resurrection (Heb. 11:17-19). Abraham even told his servants that they would both return from the mountain. When Isaac asked his father where the sacrificial lamb was, Abraham responded by assuring Isaac, and himself, that God would provide

At the very last moment, as Abraham raised the knife to slay his son, God stopped him. God did exactly what Abraham had told Isaac. He provided a ram for sacrifice.

Abraham passed the test. He was obedient, at all cost, even to the point of sacrificing his son. God blessed Abraham’s obedience by promising him descendants more numerous than the stars (Gen. 22:18).Obedience always precedes blessing.

Christians go through many tests. Like Abraham, we must be obedient at all cost. God is still Jehovah Jireh. He will provide! When the checking account falls short, Jehovah Jireh will provide. When you are forced to choose between paying bills and purchasing food, Jehovah Jireh will provide. When you face insurmountable medical costs, Jehovah Jireh will provide. He may not move the mountain, but Jehovah Jireh will provide, just as He provided for Abraham.

We have no need to worry. We have God’s promise: “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:19).

Our Father, we all worry. Help us to have faith like Abraham – a faith that trusts You completely. Thank You, Jehovah Jireh, for always providing exactly what we need. Amen.
