GIANT SLAYING FAITH

By Carolyn Dale Newell

And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him.

1 Samuel 22:2 NKJV

Why would David surround himself with distressed, indebted and discontented men? A better question may be: would we risk our lives like these four hundred men did to help David? He was hiding in caves as King Saul hunted him down like a wild animal. Perhaps, they believed God would make David king since Samuel had anointed him. Possibly, they had hopes of high government positions, but maybe they were looking for more than just a promotion in life. Did they desire strong faith, the unwavering trust in God that David possessed?

Their faith received a boost when David found them useful. David knew God works in ordinary people, and he believed God had surrounded him with an extraordinary group of ordinary men.

Can you imagine them gathering in the cave listening to David’s story about killing Goliath? I can hear David explaining to them how it was not the stone in his forehead, but it was God who brought the giant down (1 Sam. 17:49).  How their faith must have increased!

Do you know someone who has shown tremendous faith during times of suffering? I am drawn to people like that. My faith is strengthened as I listen to them describe the way God moved in their lives.

Many of us are distressed, in debt and discontented, but God can use us too. We are ordinary people who can do extraordinary things through the power of the Holy Spirit. We can slay giants through that same power. We do not have to remain distressed, in debt, and discontent. We can trust God. That is what faith is all about – trusting God. No matter what giant stands in your path today, ask God for giant slaying faith. Ask Him to do the extraordinary in your life.

Lord, many giants stand before us today. Give Your children extraordinary faith. As You go before us, slay the giants with Your mighty arm. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

DIG DEEPER

HIKING THE TRAIL

Do not compare yourself to the giant in your path. Rather compare the giant to God. No giant is bigger or stronger than God.
