AT A PRICE
By Carolyn Dale Newell
And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him…
John 19:17-18 (NKJV)
As I came into the house after my walk, I thanked God as usual. I am almost totally blind, and I normally walk alone. Therefore, I always thank God for keeping me safe from harm. That particular day I was giving details in my thanks. “Thank You, God that I did not fall down or become a victim of some crime. I really thank You that I did not get hit by a car…” That is when I realized that He has rescued me from something much worse than getting hit by a car.
I began asking God for forgiveness. He has kept me from an eternity in hell. Not only have I been saved from the horrors of hell, but that cost Him something. It costs Him nothing to keep me safe every day, but the price for my salvation was extremely high. It cost God His only begotten Son.
How could I be so grateful for safety without thanking Him daily for the enormous price of my salvation? This needs to go beyond the simple gratitude for saving me. I need to be reminded of the cross of Christ every day. I want to remember the beatings which pierced His skin. I want to remember the thorns pushed into His head. I want to remember the nails in His hands and feet. I want to think about the splintery cross as He hung there gasping for air.
We get so caught up in today – our needs for today, our blessings for today – that we sometimes forget that all this doesn’t cost God anything. Our salvation cost Him everything. I still thank God for my safe walks and rightly so, but I make a point to remember how He rescued me at a price.
Lord Jesus,
Help me remember the enormous suffering You endured on my behalf. Thank You for making it possible for me to receive salvation. Amen.
